Sports Medicine

Sports medicine describes the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of injuries arising from sports and exercise. The sports medicine team often compromises physicians, athletic trainers, surgeons, and physical therapists. It has molded from the simplest form of injury assessment on the field to the more broader form that we currently understand. The term has been popularized by hi-tech rehabilitation, sports specific training, and multi-disciplinary interventions.

Xcel Physical Therapy offers sports rehabilitation, athletic training, sport specific drills, sports enhancement and physical training to all active clients, not just the “athletes” as we believe that all clients are striving for a high level of function which may include leisure activities and other active exercises. Specific strategies used by Xcel include agility training/drills, athletic taping/splinting, on the field evaluations, sports conditioning, and return to sports.  Ben Kolly has worked at the Division I collegiate level as well as semi-professional level. He has worked at several sports camps, Michigan high school state finals, MAC and Big 10 championships.

To maximize safe return to functional activities, evaluate specific performances, and keep rehabilitation fun Xcel Physical Therapy incorporates the Wii TM into many interventions.  We are one of the pioneers to use this system in the rehabilitation world and definitely the first in Northern Michigan.

The WiiTM is an interactive program that replicates your movements and allows patients to perform functional movements such as bowling, squatting and throwing in a safe environment.  Your clinician can show you to progress this toward real life scenarios.
